Currently have a part finished basement total space measuring 24ft x 31.25ft.
The unfinished part contains the furnace (driving forced air heating and AC), water heater, washer & dryer. The floor is unfinished concrete and the walls are unfinished also. There are 2 basement windows to the front and rear. There is no ceiling.
The finished part is used as a family room including 2 computer stations. The floor is part bare concrete and part old linomeum floor tiles that look like they are there from original construction in 1950. The walls have wood paneling on lower half (dark stained) and plaster upper half with the plaster continuing to ceiling (height 7ft 6inches). This area also has 2 basement windows front & rear.
The 2 sections are currently segregated by a plasterboard wall that is approximately 12ft from the right side wall (as viewed from front of house). Staircase leads down from 1st floor into the more finished area leading to the front of the house and either side of the staircase (approx 7ft apart) are 2 supporting beams running front to back of the house.
We would like to refresh the look of the basement and create a lighter look. We want to continue to use the space as part laundry area and family room (family of 5), but segregate these areas such as the family room can be used as our main family entertainment area, incorperating a large, flat panel TV screen. The laundry area does not need to be large, but does need to be big enough for someone to work in, but ironing etc will not be done in this space.
I would also like to ensure that ethernet cables, wiring etc for the numerous computers, wirelss access controllers, FIOS can be put into the walls as much as possiple to avoid exposed wiring.
The basement area is not currently waterproofed and this will need to be completed as part of the renovation. The basement has only flooded once (during Irene) but don't want to repeat that experience if we are going to make this into truly usable space.
We are looking for design ideas for this space that we will want to execute this year.
Ideally we would move the staircase to create more room in the main area, but not sure that is possible. Would like to see designs that both move the stairs to lead towards the right side wall as well as leave the stairs in place.
Our main design criteria is we want to provide a space that we are happy to spend a significant proportion fo family time in. We do not want a bland, white basement with a TV plunked on the wall, but something a little more appealing. No specific selection criteria, but we are environmentally minded, so green design and eco friendly solutions are a plus.
We are looking for designs of the space that includes layout, plans, topviews, some 3D modelling to get an idea of the design is preferred along with text descriptions.
