Family room - 19' x 15', used for casual meetings, entertaining, media viewing, conversation, listening to music. Monuments include 72" brick fireplace and 70" sliding glass door on same north facing wall -- cannot move these. Need seating for a minimum of 6 people. Lighting -- glass door faces north, natural lighting is limited. Current have two small ceiling mount fixtures overhead, and floor accent lighting. Ceiling height 8'. We'd like to move the TV above the fireplace and incorporate the design around that, getting rid of the large media cabinet.
Kitchen -- overall footprint will not change. We are replacing 30 year old laminate cabinets and counter tops in existing footprint but need ideas for design (color, style, hardware, materials). Lighting -- currently a mix of ceiling mounted fixtures. Would like replacement ideas and will consider rewiring for another option if it works with the budget. We are removing the "bar" area because it impedes egress to back yard. For the dining nook (95" x 85"), need recommendations for furniture, accessories. Must seat at least 5. We dislike glass table and would prefer wood.
Design considerations -- the home is a traditional 2 story American colonial, however we prefer rustic, Spanish and French influences. Must be comfortable, inviting, clean space (not overly fussy). Flooring in both family and dining room are going to be refinished hardwood in a medium-brown stain. We've considered knocking out the wall between the rooms, but like having "separate" entertaining spaces. We're wondering though if perhaps we should open up the wall or create a pass through.
Overall budget is $25,000 and estimate 40% go to new cabinets and counter tops.
