We have analyzed your goals and problems in great detail and we took design considerations into account. We made it our primary goal to keep the remodeling cost effective, as well as to better the overall layout and sense of “movement” through the cottage.
The changes we have mostly reflect the connection between the rooms (living room, kitchen and the study), where we aimed for a circular motion which serves a physical purpose (air circulation) as well as an important psychological purpose (sense of openness).
Kitchen and bathroom
In this area we experimented with moving the entire bathroom unit to a central position, but with several layouts we have drafted, the overall result came at the expense of valuable space, rendering the kitchen even more difficult and inefficient to work in. The solution we came up with keeps the bathroom in the exact location, but it makes it less obstructing due to newly designed kitchen layout. A person working in the kitchen is not being disturbed by people passing by to use the bathroom. There is also a rather simple logic behind this decision, where it wasn’t really worth sacrificing the space which is used constantly (kitchen or living room) over the space which is used occasionally (like the bathroom)
The kitchen was rearranged with an island layout, where we tried to use the maximum of the remaining space. With our analysis and your description of the cottage as something that is being used not so frequently, we calculated that the kitchen storage capacity is sufficient for such use. Kitchen is now also connected to the living room, which makes it easier to entertain guests in the living room, while you are still working in the kitchen. Added counter-top can also be used for quick meals, or additional seating space for larger gatherings. Therefore, the dining table can be downsized, or completely removed when not needed.
Living Room and Study
Living Room and study were also connected. This is optional, but recommended. We also devised a new staircase, but please take note that the devised staircase will only be needed if the existing closet is less than 2m (6’5”) tall and less than 65cm (2’) wide (so it can accommodate a functional door). This connection is recommended because it will make a greater use of the study, which can be turned into a lounge room, and in cases where you entertain guests the connection serves as a direct access to the deck which is more favorable then using the kitchen as your gateway to the deck! This room could also be useful in situations where you have to move guests from the deck (due to rain, or other factors) but still keep the view. Wide french doors provide view toward the marshes. This room can also be used as a additional guest room or bedroom (if outfitted with proper furniture, such as convertible sofa for example).
Colors and Materials
In terms of colors and fabrics, we went for light and muted color scheme for several practical reasons. Small spaces in general look much larger and “airer” with lighter colors. Muted tones (tones with slight yellowish/gray tint) are easier to maintain and are recommended for places which are not in constant use. Fabrics were also chosen to reflect the “cottage feeling”, with french and English cottages used as our inspiration.
As for the materials used, we haven’t devised any new materials, and according to the photographs materials found present are adequate, such as the flooring. The only thing we would change is the dark wood paneling on the wall, due to reasons described in our color choices. As for the kitchen, we would recommend refurbishing existing cabinets as much as possible, with the addition of the butchers-block counter-top which can be found in a variety of types (including recycled wood which is cost-effective), off course in regard to our suggested color-scheme as can be seen on provided 3D renderings!
Overall speaking, working on this project was a fun and challenging a bit, which is what is favored in our little studio. We hope we met your expectations
