The proposal focuses heavily on the connection to the site on which it sits and its surroundings nearby.
In the intial approach, you are met immediately with the entrance as you walk from the lower drive up toward the house. The volume extends out slightly to greet visitors and provide a tall, airy vestibule whose light and expanse will make all who enter feel welcome.
After unlacing your shoes in the mudroom and storing your jacket, you travel through the double height space, along the wall of cupboard storage, up the stairs toward the main part of the house.
At the top of the stair, you reach the sun/dining room. Bi folding doors and operable timber louvres open the space to an outdoor breakfast terrace that bathes in the sun, and when closed offer privacy from the adjacent houses, but allow the Norwegian sun to pierce and glow throughout the adjacent main living space. Through the open floor plan this sunlight will seep into the living room, lighting the ground floor.
From this split level, walk past the expanded WC and laundry room and you are taken up to the living room you've just glimpsed from below. The completely open plan and bifolding doors on the ground floor allow for one fluid space - kitchen, living, and terrace - that opens up to the distant water and islands.
The home office sits at the top of the next set of existing stairs and is open to the living room below. From here, you are also able to access the sauna, whose space focuses on the large framed view of the fjord beyond. After a warm, tranquil bask in the steam and view you can proceed to the master suite, where, upon entering the door you are confronted with another breathtaking framed vista just beyond the private balcony. The master en ensuite takes advantage of the orientation towards the water by sidling the bathtub up to the window. Soak it all in.
On the lower floor, the spaces are carefully organized to be as democratic as possible, and aim to reduce the amount of intervention.
Formally, the proposal comprises two distinct masses which reflect the functions of the space within, but are a result of its site and orientation. The larger mass, which sits atop the solid plinth of the basement below opens itself up to the views to the northeast. The lower mass opens up to greet those who wish to enter.
